Pace Taylor est un·e artiste profondément attaché·e à la notion d’intimité et aux personnes avec lesquelles nous choisissons de la partager. Son travail, à la fois subtil, intensément queer et vulnérable, se déploie à travers des portraits stylisés réalisés au pastel et au crayon.

Portées par des tonalités chaudes d’orange, de rose et de rouge, ces œuvres donnent à voir des instants de partage, de fragilité et d’introspection. À travers elles, l’artiste nous invite à nous interroger sur l’authenticité, l’identité et la nature même des relations humaines.

Né·e en 1992, Pace Taylor vit et travaille à Kingston, New York, où iel s’est récemment installé·e après avoir passé une décennie à Portland, dans l’Oregon. Iel est diplômé·e d’un BFA en arts numériques de l’Université de l’Oregon (2015) et a depuis exposé son travail aux États-Unis et à l’international, notamment chez Nationale, Upfor et ILY2 à Portland, OR ; La Loma Projects à Los Angeles ; ainsi qu’à la Double V Gallery à Paris et Marseille.

Iel a été précédemment sélectionné·e pour participer à plusieurs résidences, dont la Golden Spot Residency de la Ford Family Foundation à Caldera, la Transformation Residency de Tropical Contemporary, la résidence Emerging Artist de Centrum, ainsi que la résidence du Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts. Pace Taylor a reçu une bourse individuelle d’artiste de l’Oregon Arts Commission en 2022, une bourse Arts3C du Regional Arts & Culture Council en 2023, et s’est vu·e décerner la Don Bachardy Fellowship par la Christopher Isherwood Foundation afin d’étudier à la Royal Drawing School de Londres, également en 2023.

Son travail est présenté de manière permanente au Anschutz Health Sciences Building de l’Université du Colorado et figure dans les collections permanentes du Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts, du Hallie Ford Museum of Art et du Portland Art Museum. Pace Taylor est représenté·e par la galerie Nationale.

Mon travail s’articule autour du sentiment d’appartenance, à la fois comme concept et comme expérience vécue. En tant qu’artiste queer, et plus encore en tant qu’artiste trans, j’ai trouvé un refuge dans la reconstitution de scènes issues de photographies trouvées ou produites par moi-même, peuplant un espace hors du temps de figures et de communautés imaginées. Mais en tant qu’artiste autiste, les enjeux quotidiens d’acceptation et de communication affleurent constamment.

Me percevant comme un narrateur peu fiable dans les interactions sociales, j’ai passé une grande partie de ma vie à analyser la manière dont les individus construisent le sentiment de communauté, parce que je me suis souvent senti·e à sa lisière. Dans ces dessins, je condense des années passées en tant que témoin - et parfois voyeur·euse - des relations des autres, les décomposant en plans malléables de pastel doux et dans la précision du graphite.

Romantique malgré tout, cette préoccupation pour l’intimité inclut aussi le fait d’en imaginer toutes les formes possibles. À travers ces images, je cherche à créer un espace visuel dans lequel chacun·e puisse se projeter et se sentir accueilli·e : une invitation à être porté·e par le langage de l’autre.

Pace Taylor is an artist emotionally invested in intimacy and the people with whom we choose to share it. Their work is often subtle, highly queer, and persistently vulnerable.

Stylized portraits, created in pastel and pencil with their characteristic warm hues of orange, pink, and red, depict moments of sharing and vulnerability. Ultimately, the artist invites us to reflect on authenticity, identity, and human connection.

Born in 1992, Pace Taylor lives and works in Kingston, NY, where they recently relocated after a decade spent in Portland, OR. They received their BFA in Digital Arts from the University of Oregon (2015) and have since shown their work nationally and internationally, including at Nationale, Upfor, ILY2 in Portland, OR; La Loma Projects in Los Angeles; Double V Gallery in Paris; and Galeria Pelaires in Mallorca, Spain. They were previously selected to participate in the Ford Family Foundation’s Golden Spot Residency at Caldera, Tropical Contemporary’s Transformation Residency, Centrum’s Emerging Artist Residency, and Crow's Shadow Institute of the Arts residency. Taylor received an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Oregon Arts Commission in 2022, an Arts3C Grant from Regional Arts & Culture Council in 2023, and was awarded the Don Bachardy Fellowship by The Christopher Isherwood Foundation to study at the Royal Drawing School of London, also in 2023. Their work is on permanent display at the University of Colorado’s Anschutz Health Sciences Building and included in the permanent collections of Crow's Shadow Institute of the Arts, the Hallie Ford Museum of Art, and the Portland Art Museum. Pace Taylor is represented by Nationale.

My work is about belonging, both as concept and feeling. As a queer artist, and moreover, as a trans artist, I have found comfort in re-constructing scenes from found or self-produced photographs and populating a space outside of time with imagined selves and community. But as an autistic artist, daily concerns of acceptance and communication bleed through.

As my own unreliable narrator in social interactions, I have spent much of my life picking apart how it is that people find community because I often feel on the outside of it.

In these drawings, I am distilling years of being a witness, and sometimes a voyeur, to other’s relationships, breaking them down into mutable planes of soft pastel and the specificity of graphite.

Still, as a romantic, this preoccupation with intimacy includes dreaming up all of the ways it can exist, and through these images I attempt to create a visual space that others can project into and be embraced; an offer to be held by another’s language.
